The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted life to two death convicts in the 2002 American Center attack case in Kolkata with a rider that the mastermind will remain behind the bars till death and the other will spend at least 30 years in jail without remission.
The apex court said the death row convicts failed to point out 'error apparent on the face of record' in the judgment.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala assured Bano, represented through her lawyer Shobha Gupta, that the new bench will be formed at the earliest.
The bench also pulled up the investigating officer of the case for not conducting a proper investigation.
"We find that there has been undue and unexplained delay by both the state and Central government in processing the mercy petitions," the court said.
